In celebration of Black History Month I wanted to put together a few Black-owned apps and resources as well as touch on the subject a bit. While I myself am a white woman, I support Black Lives Matter and will always stand with the Black community with love and solidarity until I die. Although my sourcing for Average Goddess does not come from a Black-owned company, I am grateful that the company I do partner with, put out a statement addressing Black Lives Matter in 2020 as well as donated $20,000 to the NAACP (the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). They also are committed to creating a work environment that is a safe, inclusive, and a diverse place welcome to people of all backgrounds, especially Black and LGBTQ+ employees. Along with their statement and donation, in the article they wrote:
“To be silent is to be complicit. We stand with the Black community and the fight against systemic racism, white supremacy, and police brutality against the Black community. Black Lives Matter.”
“We value and celebrate people for who they are.”
“To truly support Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ+ community, we must do more than make a statement—we must take action.” **
I have been corresponding with some of the team members as well in hopes that they will create more options for us as small business owners to buy from black-owned businesses in the future to be able to use for products on our websites.
Here are some awesome black-owned apps that you can use to find black-owned businesses, restaurants, and also for self-care tips!
1) Official Black Wall Street - A Black-owned business discovery app. Instagram: @officialblackwallstreet
2) Shine - A black-owned self-care app and also found on Instagram
@theshineapp for daily self-care tips, meditations, guidance, etc.
3) Eat Okra - The go-to app for discovering Black-owned restaurants nationwide. Instagram @eatokratheapp
I also found an article that lists 45 Black-owned wineries across the world and I hope to visit each and every one of them one day! You best believe that when Covid is over I will be gathering up some friends, putting on some Average Goddess wine shirts and going out wine-tasting to the Northern California ones in my neck of the woods! Here's the link:
I will continue to listen, educate myself, and learn more ways to be an ally and support the Black Community.
